What is VWAP? The Minute Trading
Price is what you pay. Value is what you get. On a market order, the price displayed at time T is never the actual price paid once the order is processed by the order book. The VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price) addresses this issue differently: it calculates, over a given period, the average price at which an asset has traded, weighted by the volumes traded at each level.
A single line, continuously recalculated, that serves as a benchmark. Above it, buyers have generally paid more than the average. Below it, less. A neutral reference, difficult to manipulate, that professional desks treat as a judge of peace.
A classic moving average weights each close equally, whether it was formed on a huge volume or on three isolated orders at 3 AM. The VWAP, however, only weighs what has actually changed hands, and in quantity.
This is why managers who need to liquidate or build a large position use it as an execution benchmark: an order executed below the VWAP on a buy, or above it on a sell, is considered a good execution. There’s nothing speculative about it; it’s a tool for measuring execution quality, not a buy signal in itself. In crypto, where the market never closes and the order book runs 24/7, traders generally use a 24-hour rolling VWAP or anchored to a specific starting point, due to the lack of a trading session to reset it each morning.
The most telling illustration dates back to a level that became famous among technical analysts. For several months, Bitcoin consistently struggled against its annual VWAP, never managing to hold above it for long.
On February 8, 2022, CoinDesk reported that this wall had finally given way: the price was then around $42,500, breaking through the line after several failed attempts. Analysts from Delphi Digital summarized the event as follows: "The annual VWAP of 2022 acted as a key resistance. With Bitcoin around $42,500, the VWAP was convincingly breached on Friday, after several failed breakout attempts." The level, previously a ceiling, then behaved like a floor, exactly the role expected of a VWAP once broken over time.
The VWAP works better as a filter than as an isolated signal. A price that remains stuck above it, session after session, indicates structural buying pressure. A price that falls back below after testing it several times signals the opposite.
The real value of the tool, for an individual trader, lies less in its ability to predict a movement than in its ability to assess, afterward, whether an execution was good or bad, a reflex directly related to the issue of slippage discussed elsewhere in this series. Platforms like TradingView display it natively across all timeframes, for free, alongside the anchored VWAP, without requiring any subscription to a professional terminal. This makes a tool long reserved for institutional desks accessible to any trader equipped with a simple chart.
